Twilight Workout Routine – Taylor Lautner Gains 30 Pounds of Muscle in a Year

Updated slightly, here’s an oldie but a goodie from back in 200913 years later, the Twilight workout routine is still legit as ever.

Introducing Taylor Lautner and the Twilight Movies

If you are a Twilight fan, you have already seen The Twilight Saga: New Moon and you already know who Taylor Lautner is, aka Jacob Black the werewolf. And if you know about all that you know about the Twilight workout routine aka the Taylor Lautner workout routine.

I have seen the movie and I was not altogether impressed, although it was not a bad movie. I would give it a 7 out of 10, while IMDB has it at 4.5 out of 10. It is a thrilling romance/monster story for teenage girls. Almost everything about the flick is targeted at girls but I know a few bros who enjoy it and have watched it multiple times (including this author).

What I was more impressed by, is the evolution of Taylor Lautner. In nine months, this 17-year-old dude gained 30 pounds of muscle to better pull off his changing into a werewolf for New Moon. Granted, if he didn’t gain the weight the part of Jacob Black would have been recast.

Taylor Lautner used to be a 5’10”, 140-pound fairly ripped martial artist, but now he’s a weightlifting beast. So, just how did Taylor Lautner gain 30 pounds of muscle so quickly?

He maximized his genetic potential, and you can too.

Taylor Lautner’s Background

This kid was always gifted genetically and physiologically.

At age 6 he started studying karate and by age 7 he was already winning tournaments. By age 8 he was training under seven-time world karate champion Mike Chat and ended up winning 3 gold metals representing the US in the World Karate Association. By age 12 he had 3 Junior World Championships and was ranked number one in the world for NASKA’s Black Belt Open Forms, Musical Weapons, Traditional Weapons, and Traditional Forms.

Incidentally, for those of you with kids, you can see him in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D showing off some fierce martial arts skills.

Taylor is also a star football and baseball player. He can play running back, middle linebacker, center field, and second base. He’s also part of a hip-hop dance group and can most likely break dance with the best of them.

As I said, Taylor Lautner is genetically predisposed to being an athletic specimen.

Bulking up for Twilight: New Moon

Because of his athletic lifestyle as a child, Taylor already has the muscle maturity of a young adult. The neurological pathways are well defined for him to maximize the mind-muscle connection for weight training. This helps prove that focus and concentration are important parts of training. The more efficiently you can recruit your muscle fibers, the more progress you will see.

Since Taylor Lautner was already so small, thanks in part to his need for low body weight as a martial artist, it was easy for him to stack on the first 15-20 pounds of muscle. He probably pulled that off in the first 5 months of training.

This was essentially the amount of muscle that, as a man, his body would be able to carry comfortably. A normal man, with a full-time job and other responsibilities, can accomplish this in 12-24 months. It took Mr. Lautner about half a year to do it thanks to his celebrity lifestyle, previous athletic training, a hell of a lot of motivation, focus, and drive, and the Twilight workout routine.

Since Taylor Lautner is an actor, he could easily dedicate every waking hour to eating and training. From what I understand, he is quoted as saying:

“I get into the gym every single day, seven days a week, two hours a day, eat as much as I possibly can. I had to basically kill myself [in the gym].”

However, as most of you know, this can lead to serious overtraining and loss of muscle. Taylor reflected on this issue in another interview, saying:

“I was in the gym five days a week, two hours a day. At one point, I was going seven days straight. I had put on a lot of weight, and then i started losing it drastically, so I was worried. It turned out I was overworking myself.”

He wasn’t giving his body enough rest, taking some time off between weight training sessions. Lack of sleep also played a role in hindering his success, so he scaled back to 5 days a week of weight training and concentrated on getting more sleep. Man, did it pay off!

Taylor now knows that eating enough of the right foods should not be underestimated. He admitted in an interview that maintaining his aggressive diet was the hardest part of his weight gain routine. He reflected:

“At one point I had to shove as much food in my body as possible to pack on calories. My trainer wanted me to do six meals a day and not go two hours without eating. Basically I’m supposed to eat everything I can and try to keep it lean. Lean meats and veggies.”

Taylor said of his personal trainer Jordan Yuam:

“He’s really talented. He helped me a lot with this process. He’s always on set, like, shoving food in my mouth. Literally, I’d be talking to somebody and he comes up with a plate. He wakes me up in the morning. He’s like, ‘Take this protein shake.’ I’m like, ‘I’m sleeping.’ Yeah, I have a lot of people to thank.”

The Taylor Lautner Workout Routine

Taylor said in an interview that he likes to begin his workouts with a light warm-up, usually by running on the treadmill. He likes to use a lot of compound and body weight exercises such as push-ups, squats, dips, pull-ups, and lunges.

Final Thoughts

Based on everything I read, I can guess at what his training routine probably looked like.

Read about it in my article on Werewolf Training. Try it and maybe you can gain 30 pounds of muscle on the Twilight workout routine as Taylor did.

  1. […] what goes into the Taylor Lautner workout? To gain 30 pounds in a year takes a lot of hard work and eating the correct daily foods. As Taylor […]

  2. Yes it is COMPLETELY POSSIBLE, at 31 years old, 5’7″ and 135 LBS, I gained over 33 LBS by following a weight lifting program very similar to Taylor’s…high protein, good carbs, 4 days a week in the gym, plenty of rest, RECUPERATING is the KEY, your body needs to REST after blasting your muscles and rebuild. At 34, i still hit the gym and have maintained my muscle mass at around 170 lbs. Just keep striving for your personal goals fellas and great article, Steve.

  3. I completely disagree with people who say that Taylor used steroids…a lot of hard work ( compound exercises, isolation here and there, varying sets and reps every workout ) and perfect nutrition ( good fats, lean meats and veggies, brown rice, oatmeal, all in all high quality carbohydrates ) and eating every 2-3 hours + drinking water throughout the day and sleeping 8 hours is basically all you need + he was 16 at the time and testosterone was at his highest at that time so what else do you need!? You get what you put in and he obviously fought really hard for that role. Good job Taylor!

  4. I love taylor he is the hotttest guy ever! I am a total twi-fan. I can’t wait to see the Twilight saga Breaking Dawn part 1. TEAM JACOB

  5. One of the things you have to keep in mind is, Taylor was and is still a growing kid. Meaning that in a year’s time, especially in the 16-17 year age range, most boys are gaining some weight each year just from growing in height, bone density/thickness, becoming a man, etc…this could have easily accounted for 8-10 lbs of his 30 lbs weight gain over most of that year. Which means that he may have only needed to add 20 lbs of muscle or so from working out….VERY doable with a kid with good genetics, an athletic background, nothing to do but train and eat with an unlimited high quality food supply and high quality natural full supplementation. Not to mention a personal trainer by your side for almost a year…

Just add all that up and yes, it’s totally doable.

  6. “At one point I had to shove as much food in my body as possible to pack on calories. My trainer wanted me to do six meals a day and not go two hours without eating. Basically I’m supposed to eat everything I can and try to keep it lean. Lean meats and veggies.” Well, lean meats and veggies won’t build muscle as well as a high-fat adequate protein diet will. And fasting is also good — the 6 meals a day is an urban legend. A high saturated fat, low carbohydrate diet is an anabolic diet that burns fat and builds muscle. Intermittent fasting rests the GI tract, allows complete digestion, saves energy and increases the release of human growth hormone.

    • A high fat, low carb diet is indeed a great anabolic diet. A “high saturated diet” is not specifically necessary; the fats can be polyunsaturated or unsaturated just as well. The anabolic diet is not always tolerated well by everyone, and is not a diet that can be maintained throughout life because of the metabolic stress put on the body. It is also not a healthy diet. We need fruits, veggies, and whole grains to maintain a healthy diet. Your anabolic diet is really best for losing fat in a short period of time while maintaining muscle mass. Intermittent fasting can have some benefits but can also have negative effects on the metabolism and is generally uncomfortable. Most people would do better on a 3 meal / 2 snack diet that can be maintained throughout life.

  7. Yeah, the weight workouts help me too now and I am over 60, but I am sure the low-carb diet he perused: meat, almonds and sweet potatoes helped immensely. Since I cut out all those processed (white) carbs I feel 20 years younger and I don’t need purple pills to feel like a man. 😆

  8. Yes, thank you very much ! 🙂 So werewolf routine is actually an upper/lower body split workout, am I correct? And one more question, you, as an expert, said that there are other routines to build muscle like Taylor, could you be more precise? Thanks again Steve, cheers!

    • There are thousands of ways to structure a workout routine to build muscle. Werewolf Training is a really great example of one.

  9. Hey Steve! What means Upper / Lower Body 2-day split? Please if You could explain me little bit more because you said that you’re pretty sure that Taylor Lautner did that. Thanks!

    • I mean:
      day 1 – upper body
      day 2 – lower body
      day 3 – off
      repeat

      OR

      day 1 – upper body
      day 2 – off
      day 3 – lower body
      day 4 – off
      repeat

      OR

      day 1 – upper body
      day 2 – lower body
      day 3 – off
      day 4 – upper body
      day 5 – off
      day 6 – lower body
      day 7 – off
      repeat

      Get the idea?

  10. it is not impossible to put on that much muscle in 9 months you just got to put the work into it, i’ve put on 20 pounds in 6 months and i was skinny 5’10 140 pounds, all you’ve got to do is eat eat eat eat and work out, today i weight in at 184 and i’ve only been working out for just a little over a year and a half so its possible

  11. i LOVE taylor!!!!i wish i was him:(im trying sooo hard.im taking a whey protien shake EVERYDAY!!!i love you taylor.LOVE YOUUUU!!!!!

  12. his biceps are amazing , and he is absolutely gorgeous 😐 !
all the girls love him especially me 🙂 i’ve seen eclipes for the third time and am just amazed at his body , no wonder robert’s Jealous ;). anyway im just saying that he is amazing and should keep doing his workouts 😀 <3 xx

  13. Hey this article is nicely put together. Thanks. Just a question, when he trained five days a week would he do upper and lower days? Or like pound arms one day, then chest, the shoulders etc.? Then let it rest for a week? I’ve been considering this but if he did it it would be just the boost to get me started. If you have any idea I’d love to know.

    • I’m pretty sure Taylor used a 2-day split, upper then lower, and kept repeating it with only one day off between workouts.

  14. Today I’ve just finished my workout routine just like Taylor Lautner did. It is secret but Jordan Yuam is my godfather and he is my trainer now and I got 35 lbs of pure muscle in 8 months =)

  15. I think Steve is right, the gains are more than possible, I know because I had similar gains myself. I went to Uni at 167lbs and had body fat at 14% as a keen and sucesful rugby player. I started hitting the weights for the first time and in my first year at Uni I rocketed up to 196lbs and 12% body fat. I did nothing but train hard, eat well and take creatine and protein supplements. You don’t need drugs, you just need the drive!!!

  16. Hi all,I’am french and i have 1 question, i do buildhealth too much as tailor black but i don’t use protein, i try to eat nicely but, finaly, can i get too much muscle as him ? in 2-3 years may be?

  17. well, i dont think he used steroids! im no expert but i would think this is very posible without using any types of illeagle drugs! plus who the heck cares! 🙂 he is hot! haha anyways im a big fan and i just saw eclipse yesterday….wow he looked GREAT! 😉

  18. Steve, I am into my second week of the werewolf workout plan and I just had a question about it. Before this I was basically just free lifting with no particular plan, but now that I’ve started this plan my workouts don’t seem to be as intense. Do you know anyone who has completed the entire thing and what were theyre gains (beside Taylor)? I’m pretty happy with it nonetheless I just want a little more info on it (i.e. should I improvise ). And does the routine push your muscles to the point where if you add on the result will be overworking?

    • People love this routine and experience 5-10 lb gains after 2-3 cycles. However, it has been reported that the routine could be more intense. My typical response is that you get out of a workout what you put into it, and that YOU should be the one to step up the intensity. I bet you are not using heavy enough weights and are resting too much between sets. That being said, I do see a couple minor adjustments that I would like to make to the routine so that people will ‘feel better’ when they finish each workout.

  19. If Taylor Lautner is really 5’6″, I’m only 1 inch shorter than him. SO THAT WOULD MEAN I’M 5’5″!!! Sweet!

  20. “This was essentially the amount of muscle that, as a man, his body would be able to carry comfortably”

I have to say I hate this current trend on the net of people suggesting that slim people can put on muscle easily because that is the “amount of muscle they should have”. It shows a total lack of understanding of human development and growth.

I place a bet that if he stopped training and eating like he had been this “natural level” of muscle would decrease somewhat. In fact I would suggest that there are more non training people in the world who look like is first picture than his second. So this whole “natural” level of muscle he “should” have had in the first place goes out the window in my book.

I have to agree with some people that 30lbs of muscle is not a usual amount to again in year even for young people. I am sure there will be alot who say it is possible or that they have done it but if you ask them to prove it with a photo they will suddently go very quiet. So for a year traing he has achieved what 95% of people would have failed to do.

  21. Damn!!!!!!!!!! Taylor is a sexy beast!!! he is such a good actor too. i love him. The wolf part really does fit him in the movie. he truley is every girls dream the perfect man he got the body the looks and the personality. lol 🙂 he my man

  22. The numbers do add up when I was 17 I put on 13lbs of lean muscle in 3 months, nothing illegal used, and having had a sporting background with both my parents being former athletes so good genes as well, what Steve is saying makes sense to me, though I must add that even now only 2 years older at 19 now I don’t reckon I could repeat those kind of gains and if i did it would require a lot more commitment and “clean” calories.

    • I agree it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibilities. He has a solid history of athletic participation and that is important. I graduated high school at 6′ 130lbs (distance runner). I got injured my freshman yr and couldn’t run so I decided to gain mass. At the end of my freshman yr in college I was 155lbs with about 7-8% body fat. My only supplement was 90-120g of whey protein per day. I ate a lot of peanut butter and anything else I could get my hands on, I just have insane metabolism that keep me lean. I also used a program similar to werewolf training, so for you doubters out there take note from an avg. joe.. it can be done.

  23. steve: your werewolf training is nicely done. its funny how people can say that taylor lautner uses steroids.

  24. I have to agree with steve here. I am 20 years old, very active and have an athletic build. All through high school I weighed in at 180 pounds. At 6ft 2in that is considered pretty good shape, but i wanted to gain muscle. I didn’t hit the weights hard until July of 2009 and I weighed 185 pounds, and was pretty lean(10% body fat). Now I am 206 pounds with only 11% body fat. I train 5 days a week AT lEAST, go to school full time and pull a part time job. It’s definitely possible. To all you nay-sayers, you get back what you put out. Hard work = hard gains. Eating all the right things with all the right supplements can and will help, but honestly it comes down to one thing. Effort.

  25. I seriously doubt he is clean for one reason: He was a typical ectomorph. In fact he was almost anorexic: 5’10” and 140 lbs? That is the living definition of a hard gainer. There is no way he could gain 30 lbs of LEAN MUSCLE (he is just as lean in the second pic) with his frame unless he had help. It IS just about impossible, muscle maturity or not. If anything he was genetically pre disposed NOT to be able to gain that kind of mass without serious help.

    • I disagree. He had very little muscle mass on his body when he was skinny and small, but his metabolism is clearly through the roof. Therefore he probably ate 5000 or more calories a day; used legal supplements like creatine, amino acids, and protein sups; and avoided anything that would expend calories unnecessarily. Using this strategy, with his starting body composition, he could easily gain 30 lbs in 9-12 months and stay pretty damned lean to boot. I highly doubt he would use steroids or HGH at his age, knowing the consequences. Now Stallone, Arnold, or any of those older muscle heads – yeah they clearly use HGH and possibly test to get into bulky physical shape.

    • @ Joe:

You obviously do not know much about muscle building. His results are very believable. Did you forget the fact that he had basically a free year to do nothing but prepare for his role. Being a celebrity, you got the huge advantage of motivation and help of top personal trainers. Why would he even think about steroids at 17 years of age?!

  26. I love Twilight! I can’t wait for Twilight Eclipse! I’m so in love with taylor, lol.
I still believe that the first movie was better, but New Moon definitely wins in eye candy lol

  27. oh my god taylor is so hot, the training did great for him..he is every girls dream lol..send him my way 🙂

  28. @hmmm – why does everyone assume that spectacular results are due to cheating (drugs)? His results are uncommon, but not impossible. Steve’s answer is right.

  29. Hmmm… 16-17 years old… 9 months… 30 pounds…. These numbers to not add up (naturally at least)… Unless he’s a mutant and can go thru puberty 3 times in one life (or in 9 months at that)

    • Hmmm: The numbers do add up when you consider Taylor’s muscle maturity from athletic training his entire life. He is obviously gifted physiologically, so now his body holds muscle that is easy to carry naturally. Following Werewolf Training, a normal person’s gains might be cut in half – 15 lbs of muscle in a year – if they do every single other thing right: lifestyle, training, nutrition, recovery.

      • I agree, the numbers add up. Its an average of a little over 3 pounds a month that is a pretty standard number for an adolescent working hard and eating a lot of calories.

    • I started lifting weights at 16 and put on 20 pounds of muscle.. i did it all naturally so it can be done if you have a good diet and work hard
