A human body is made up of different physical parts that come together to form a complex system. All these body parts will not be able to function if they are not facilitated by certain chemical bodies such as enzymes and hormones. These chemical bodies exist both in males and females and allow the body to perform various different functions. There are growth hormones, sexual hormones, and reproductive hormones among many others. The hormonal activity in a human body within itself is a very complicated one. It is important that the hormone level is maintained at a certain level in order for your body to be able to perform its functions normally.

Fortunately or unfortunately, many times this hormonal activity is played around by the use of drugs knows as anabolic steroids. These are C class drugs that are designed to increase hormone production in the human body. Anabolic steroids were initially formulated in the early twentieth century with an intent to provide clinical treatment for medical conditions that stem from or result in a loss of hormone. The intake of Anabolic steroid results in increased level of hormone production which can help in treating various hormonal conditions. It is also often used to fill up the shortfall in a human body created by lower hormonal production, treatment of breast cancer etc.

Interestingly, these steroids were found to have an impact on the human body in terms of muscle and bone mass growth, increase in physical strength and stamina and increase athletic performance. As a result, many athletes and bodybuilders do consume these steroids in order to enhance their performance. Unfortunately, most people are not aware of the fact that the benefits of taking anabolic steroids is conditional and can, in fact, result in severe steroid side effects if the intake is not medically prescribed and supervised.

Misuse of Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic Steroids do have its own merits which are why there is no blanket ban on sale or consumption of these drugs. However, there are demerits and side effects along with the misuse and the moral and ethical dilemmas associated with these steroids. For that reason, Anabolic Steroids are classified as C class drugs that should only be sold by pharmacists on a physician prescription. It is illegal for anyone to carry or consume these drugs without a prescription, or sell or supply them without an authorized pharmacy license.

Regardless of the legal standing of the drugs, many people who are fitness freaks or are active competitors in sports and athletic events are tempted to consume these drugs as a performance enhancer. Consumption of these steroids as performance enhancers without any underlying medical condition is illegal and can result in disqualification from the competition.

Side Effects of Anabolic Steroids

As meritorious as Anabolic steroids sound, it should be remembered that these steroids are primarily meant for producing hormones in a human body and should only be used to make up for hormonal deficiencies. Excessive use of these steroids to enhance muscle growth or athletic performance can have severe effects on liver functions and may even lead to fatal heart strokes. Other than that acne breakouts and excessive body hair growth is common side effects. It can also have effects on mental health such as depression, mood swings and irritation
