Since the late 1990’s Dr. John Berardi has published 8 scientific abstracts; 15 scientific papers and textbook chapters; presented at nearly 50 scientific, exercise, and nutrition related conferences; and published countless articles online.
His first articles at Testosterone Magazine so many years ago, provided me with the basis for everything I know about nutrition today. Now I will turn some of that knowledge over to you in the form of Nutrition Tips written by Dr. Berardi himself.
Today’s Topic – The Best Omega 3 Snacks
You already know how important it is to have a healthy Omega 3 : Omega 6 ratio in your diet. More Omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) means a healthier heart and decreased inflammation, which is especially good for those of us who inflame our muscle tisses by detroying them with resistance training.
For decades, Fish Oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids has been revered as the best fat for building health and healing properties. Many of us take omega-3 supplements to ensure our intake of the all-important DHA (docosahexaenoic) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic) acids while eliminating the dangers of consuming too many heavy metals and contaminants.
With a direct impact on reducing LDL (the bad-guy cholesterol) and preventing heart disease and stroke, the omega-3’s that abound in Fish oil are genuinely great wonders of nature when it comes to maintaining our overall health and well being. Surprisingly though, only 90% of the omega-3’s we ingest from Fish Oil are absorbed by our bodies. Enter Krill Oil (ClevelandLeader Krill Oil), the ultra-talented new kid on the block who’s already outshining his very successful predecessor.(more…)
A study of potential schizophrenics has determined that supplementing with fish oil, primarily long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, can reduce the risk of ever developing full-blown schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder. In fact, supplementing with fish oil was found to be equally effective at preventing psychotic episodes as anti-psychotic medications.
The study was conducted with 81 patients at ultra-high risk of developing a psychotic disorder. At the end of the study, less than 5% of patients supplementing with fish oil developed full-blown psychosis, while nearly 28% of patients in the placebo group transitioned to a psychotic state.
This is great news for adolescents, since that age group is highly affected by the weight gain side effects of anti-psychotic medication. Supplementing daily with fish oil sounds like a great idea to me.
We all know how important it is to get enough essential fatty acids in your diet, especially Omega-3s. What better way to get your daily dose of Omega-3s, than to supplement with fish oil?
If you are unfamiliar with the benefits of supplementing with fish oil, read some of the following posts:
The essential Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The human body cannot synthesize Omega-3 fatty acids, but it can form 20 and 22 carbon, unsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids from the 18 carbon Omega 3 fatty acid ALA.
Both the Omega-3 ALA and Omega-6 linoleic acid are essential nutrients which must be obtained from food or supplements.
Synthesis of the longer Omega-3 fatty acids from linoleic acid within the body is competitively slowed by the Omega-6 analogues. This is why it is very easy to end up with a deficit of Omega-3 fatty acids if additional Omega-3s are not ingested through Omega-3 supplementation.
